About This Piece
This is the piece most people come to us for. You post us a small snippet of hair from your horse — a few strands from the mane or tail is plenty — and we create a vessel in their memory.
The vessel is formed, bisque fired, then brought out of the kiln while it is still around 1000°F. The hair is laid onto the glowing surface by hand, where it carbonises instantly and leaves a dark, smoke-like line burned permanently into the clay. No two marks are ever the same, because no two horses' hair behaves the same way.
Because of how it is made, the pattern genuinely cannot be repeated or replicated. If something goes wrong at the kiln we will tell you, and we always ask for a little more hair than we need so there is a margin for it.
We will send you a photograph before it ships. If you would like to see the hair being laid on, we can film that too — a surprising number of people find that part matters as much as the finished piece.
Questions
How long does the Horsehair Memorial Vessel take to arrive?
This piece is made to order. 4-6 weeks from receiving hair Once finished it is posted with tracking, which typically adds 2-7 days.
What is the Horsehair Memorial Vessel made from?
Stoneware, your horse's hair. Every piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small variations between pieces are normal and expected.
How do I send hair or ashes for this piece?
Request a commission and we will reply with simple, clearly written posting instructions. A small snippet of hair, or roughly a teaspoon of ashes, is plenty. Any remainder is always returned to you with the finished piece.
Can this piece be recreated exactly?
No, and that is deliberate. The markings form as the hair carbonises against hot clay, so the pattern cannot be repeated. Each commission is genuinely one of a kind.
